What Do You Want to be When You Grow Up?

Author: Larry Chester

With more than 70 years under my belt, pondering this question is sometimes philosophical and sometimes whimsical, but it’s still real. When I was in college, my dad said something prescient. “Learn as much as you can about as many different things as you can, because the job you’re going to have 20 years from now doesn’t exist today.”

That’s even more true today than it was 50 years ago. But even now, I recognize that just because I got an education and training in a particular field doesn’t mean that I need to stay there. Your response is, “I’m an entrepreneur. I own a business, and I’m stuck doing things to grow and develop my business.” Think about all the things that must be done. Strategic planning, Human Resources, Product Development, Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, Accounting and Finance, IT – and that’s not all.
What is it that you want to be when you grow up? Even at my age, I don’t feel that I’m “stuck” in a career. Do I spend day after day toiling in functional areas that I don’t care about? Sometimes. But when something else excites me, I do it. And that’s your key.

It’s not a matter of choosing a different career. As a business owner, YOU have the choice of what you want to spend your time doing. You can concentrate on product development, marketing, finance or sales. The decision you make today doesn’t pigeonhole you for the next 5 years or even 5 days. Decide what you’re passionate about right now and act on it. Next month, when your feelings change, shift gears and do something else.

You are the master of your own destiny, and the job that you have today isn’t the job that you need to be working at tomorrow.
