Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday called on Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India (SPMCIL) to keep transforming itself to match with India's fast transition into a digital economy, as the state-owned entity's core business of printing currencies could grapple with newer challenges.

In a virtual address on the foundation day of the SPMCIL, Sitharaman flagged a scenario when there will be increasing adoption of digital currencies. "So you have to introspect (that) when the core business is getting depleted, not because of your performance but because we are moving to a digital era, what is it that you have for the future," the minister said "I would leave this thought behind for the managers and all those who are part and parcel of running this institution as to how you transform yourself, how you walk on the bridge to a new developed India, a new digital India and a new country looking forward to pushing all frontiers using technology," she added.
