Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had allocated Rs 73,000 crore for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme in last year’s budget too. The Centre has allocated Rs 73,000 crore for the rural jobs guarantee programme MGNREGA for 2022-23 in the Union Budget presented on Tuesday. This is 25.51 per cent less than the revised estimate for the current financial year.

The telecom equipment PLI has an outlay of Rs 12,195 crore, but since Rs 4,000 crore-Rs 4,500 crore is not utilised, it can be used for 5G. The government will be conducting spectrum auctions this year to enable the launch of 5G services by private telecom operators within the current fiscal. The U.S. economy added 467,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in January 2022, as the unemployment rate rose marginally to 4.0%. Growth in employment continued in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail trade, and transportation and warehousing. Job growth was much stronger than the estimate of 150,000, as compiled by Dow Jones. The forecast unemployment rate was 3.9%, essentially equal to the actual.

According to an official source, states’ governments are seen to borrow just 50% of their annual borrowing limit of 4% of GSDP in the first nine months of FY23, offsetting the impact on the market from the higher borrowings by the Centre. Thanks to the cushions of liberal interest-free capex loan from the Centre, higher tax devolution and release of GST compensation amounts, the Centre would expect rather back-loaded market borrowings by the states in the next fiscal year.
