Activisten, zo wil het dominerende verhaal, hebben geen positieve naam (zie over het belang van “the narrative”, M. J. Roe en R. Shapira, “The Power of the Narrative in Corporate Law Making”, Harvard Business Law Review 2021, 237-278). Ze zijn uit op snelle winsten en maken het leven van bestuurders zuur. Een andere visie luidt dat activisten tekortkomingen (en soms meer dan dat) in het ondernemingsbeleid blootleggen en zo waarde creëren voor alle aandeelhouders. Ook leggen activisten meer en meer niet-financiële (ESG) klemtonen.
Het “narratief” van het activisme is niet zwart-wit, maar geschakeerd. Om de verschillende facetten van (ESG)aandeelhoudersactivisme in kaart te brengen, organiseren het VBO en de Jean-Pierre Blumberg Leerstoel (UA) op 9 juni 2022 een studiedag gewijd aan activisme. Tijdens deze studiedag zullen alle facetten van (ESG)aandeelhoudersactivisme in kaart worden gebracht.
