India's income tax department sent notices to two private banks in its ongoing investigation into possible malpractices involving commission payments made by insurance companies. The initial investigation focused on over 20 insurance firms and around 500 entities linked to their sales agents. However, officials have now shifted their attention to banks, as voluminous transactions have been revealed.

The number of registered company insolvencies in March 2023 was 2,457, 16% higher than in the same month in the previous year (2,120 in March 2022), according to the latest figures released by the Insolvency Service. This was higher than levels seen while the Government support measures were in place in response to the coronavirus pandemic and also higher than pre-pandemic numbers.

Of the total deals, M&As constituted more than half, still lower by 21 per cent at USD 4.4 billion involving 76 deals, down 56 per cent during the March quarter, according to the data collated by Grant Thornton. In volume terms, overall deals fell by 46 per cent to 332 transactions. The main reason for the poor show was the tepid IPO market, which plunged to USD 84.4 million from USD 1 billion in Q1 of 2022.

Online threats in Southeast Asia grew alarmingly while Singapore logged the highest year-on-year jump in terms of web threats targeting businesses in the same period, said Kaspersky recently. According to the firm, its CybersLatest data shows a 45% jump in web threats blocked by its business solutions last year. Online threats or Web-based threats, refers to attempts to download malicious objects from a malicious/infected website, the firm said.
