Global Finance : To what extent does geography play a role in affecting a company’s valuation? If your supply chain is highly specialized, that could take years to restructure. There’s no inherent valuation. From a corporate valuation perspective, they’re not particularly interesting. So it depends.
The return on equity may be an equation that comes from accounting statements, but in keeping with my argument that every number needs a narrative, each of these numbers has a narrative, often left implicit, that should be made explicit.
I am in the third week of the corporate finance class that I teach at NYU Stern, and my students have been lulled into a false sense of complacency about what's coming, since I have not used a single metric or number in my class yet.
We learned everything, you know, across from accounting to auditing to, to tax and valuation. It’s just a fascinating conversation about looking at the world from both bottoms up and top-down, as well as thinking about what valuations are like, how likely are macro events, the impact you’re getting not just the return on capital, but as famously said in fixed income, a return of your capital. And I literally put the entire Schedule A, which is the pricing square footage unit numbers in a Hewlett Packard 41B using bit mapping. And we’d sort of turn that into a valuation business. Everybody knew the number but the appraiser. What are the, you know, I’d literally have it in my handheld. Just keep it fair.
And so there was a number of less liquid markets that made for quite wide spreads. And so there was certainly a number of different movements, but there was certainly downside of these things. And you know, I think ultimately there was a number of opportunities that came out. And so we have a number of business lines.

And so we go back to the basics of what our job should be, risk underwriting, risk assessment, asset prices are different from asset valuation. I mean the valuation is the future cash flow discounted at a risk-free rate plus a risk premium. So as the market and the industry restructure, we’ll certainly be very opportunistic.
