The Federal Open Market Committee raised its federal funds rate target by 25 basis points on Wednesday. It has raised its target by 450 basis points over the last year. In December, the median FOMC member projected the target would exceed 5 percent in 2023, but some think the Fed has already done enough to bring down inflation. Monetary policy was too loose for too long , driving up aggregate demand and causing the worst inflation in 40 years.

Along with the latest on payroll employment, unemployment, and wage growth, we will also get the final benchmark revisions for the establishment survey (CES). If 2022 was an unsettling year for equities, as I noted in my second data post, it was an even more tumultuous year for the bond market. The US treasury market, considered by some still as a safe haven, was anything but safe or a haven, especially at the long maturities, as long term rates soared, with inflation (not the Fed) being the key driver. As a result, treasury bond investors faced one of their worst years in history, losing close to a fifth of their principal, as bonds were repriced.

A major decision in retirement planning is whether to make pre-tax or Roth (after-tax) 401k contributions. Pre-tax contributions go into your retirement account with money that has not been taxed, and then taxes will be paid when the funds are withdrawn in retirement. With Roth contributions, taxes will be taken from the money prior to placing it in the plan, but it can then be withdrawn tax-free once you retire.
